About FUE hair transplant

What is a FUE hair transplant?

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a state-of-the-art hair restoration technique that involves extracting healthy hair follicles from a donor area—typically the back or sides of the head—and carefully implanting them into thinning or bald areas. Utilizing the latest minimally invasive methods, we achieve natural-looking results with faster recovery times and minimal scarring. This advanced approach ensures that patients can confidently wear their hair as short as they like without visible scarring.

How does FUE hair transplant work?

The procedure begins with a local anesthetic, ensuring your entire scalp is completely numb so you won’t feel any discomfort. Additionally, a mild sedative is available to help you relax throughout the process.

Next, our expert surgical team carefully extracts individual hair follicles from donor areas where your hair is naturally thicker—typically the back or sides of the head. This is done using a precision-engineered FUE punch (Trivellini), a specialised micro-instrument that creates tiny punctures measuring just 0.6 to 0.8mm. These ultra-small incisions heal quickly and are nearly invisible.

Each extracted graft contains 1 to 4 hair follicles, which are then meticulously implanted into small, strategically placed incisions in the areas where you want fuller, natural-looking hair growth.

Why choose an FUE hair transplant?

FUE is now the leading choice for hair transplants among both men and women.

Here’s why:

    • Minimal scarring – The tiny extraction points heal quickly, allowing you to wear your hair as short as you like without visible marks.
    • Fast recovery – Compared to FUT surgery, FUE offers a quicker, more comfortable healing process, so you can return to your daily routine sooner.
    • Natural-looking results – FUE delivers fuller, seamless hair restoration that blends perfectly with your existing hair.
    • One-day procedure – The entire treatment is completed in just a single session.
    • Exceptional success rate – At Precision Hair Clinic, FUE boasts an impressive 97%-100% success rate.

General FUE FAQs

FUE is the perfect choice for those looking for a quick recovery, minimal downtime, and virtually no scarring. Its scar-free nature makes it ideal for individuals who prefer short hairstyles or even a shaved head after their transplant.

You’ll notice the enhanced shape of your hairline immediately, with visible hair growth starting around 4-6 months post-procedure.

For more details, explore our Frequently Asked Questions about FUE hair transplants.

How much does it cost?

FUE is a highly precise procedure that takes longer than FUT, making it a more premium option. The cost primarily depends on the number of grafts required, as well as the expertise, experience, and reputation of the surgeon performing the transplant. At Precision Hair Clinic Clinic, prices start from £3,499.

While lower-cost hair transplants may seem appealing, they often come with compromises in quality. This can lead to anything from an unnatural-looking hairline to a failed transplant that requires correction. Choosing a highly skilled and experienced surgeon ensures you achieve natural, long-lasting results, protecting both your investment and your confidence.

“After months of research and multiple consultations on my hair transplant I submitted an call back from the team at PMC, rather than a member of the sales team calling back Dr Mo called me. After a lengthy chat and video call I was confident with the professionalism demonstrated. I booked an out of hours appointment in person which worked for me for the pre op consultation.

Upon arrival you are greated to a grade 2 listed building of which you would not believe could be a medical practice, inside the place is super modern and the reception team were lovely.

Within 5 minutes of being in the practice I knew this was the place for me!

Upon the day of surgery the team were all ready and waiting with everything set out and ready to rock, after a lengthy chat of what I wanted to achieve from the procedure, it was time to start the process, I hate the idea of injections but the worry was all for nothing, this is not like going abroad where a non qualified doctor can carry out parts of the procedure, all was done by a qualified doctor! Some of my friends have told me horror stories about going abroad so naturally I was anxious! But worry not! I didn’t feel a thing!!!

The Procedure

FUE is a straightforward procedure for experienced hair transplant surgeons, with graft survival rates exceeding 90% in the hands of skilled professionals.

The surgery typically takes 5 to 7 hours, with most procedures completed within a single day. The duration depends on the number of grafts required—the more grafts, the longer the procedure. To ensure optimal healing and results, it’s recommended to take at least a couple of days off work for recovery.

At Precision Hair Clinic, we offer a unique Unshaven FUE (UFUE) technique, which means you don’t have to shave your head before surgery—unless you choose to. This allows for a discreet recovery, making it easier to keep your procedure private.

Hair transplant methods

During your consultation we’ll work with you to understand your hair restoration goals and evaluate the best treatment for you.

Several key factors determine whether a hair transplant is the right solution for you:

Age & Hair Loss Progression

The extent of your hair loss plays a crucial role in determining if a transplant is the best option. If thinning or balding is minimal, medications may be a more effective treatment. However, for advanced hair loss, the availability of sufficient donor hair is essential for a successful procedure.

Donor Hair Density

A successful hair transplant depends on the density of healthy hair in the donor areas—typically the back and sides of the head. Higher donor density improves the chances of achieving full, natural-looking results.

Hair Texture

While all hair types can be transplanted successfully, certain textures require fewer grafts for optimal results. Curly or wavy hair naturally enhances density, while Afro-textured hair creates a "double-density" effect due to its curl pattern, helping to achieve thicker-looking coverage with fewer grafts.

Hair Thickness

Thicker hair provides better scalp coverage, meaning fewer grafts are needed to create a full, natural appearance compared to finer hair.

Understanding these factors can help determine if FUE hair transplant surgery is the right choice for you.

You can expect to see the full results of your hair transplant within 12 to 18 months, as the transplanted follicles reach their maximum growth potential. While most of the newly transplanted hair is permanent, some natural shedding may still occur with age.

To maintain the best possible results, it’s important to consider non-surgical treatments, such as hair-loss medication. These treatments not only enhance your transplant outcome but also help preserve existing hair in areas prone to future thinning. Since hair loss is a progressive condition, some patients may require a follow-up procedure or minor touch-ups over time.

During your consultation, we’ll create a personalised, long-term plan to help you manage hair loss effectively and maintain lasting, natural-looking results.

All hair transplant procedures will leave some degree of scarring, but when performed by an experienced surgeon, these scars will be minimal and often virtually undetectable. Scarring from FUE techniques is usually not visible once there is even a small amount of hair growth in the donor area. However, FUT procedures leave a linear scar that may be more noticeable with shorter hair, making this method more suitable for those who plan to maintain longer hair.

LIAM's FUE Hair Transplant Review

From start to finish, the experience has been exceptional. After my initial conversation with Dr. M, I felt completely reassured about what to expect, and all my questions were thoroughly answered. On the day of the procedure, Dr. M and his team were outstanding. The atmosphere was calm and relaxing, and the team went above and beyond to ensure my comfort. A friend, who had a transplant in September, recommended Precision Hair Clinic to me due to their positive experience, and I’ll be doing the same for friends considering treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Several factors determine whether a hair transplant is the right option for you, including:

Age
Your current level of hair loss plays a significant role in whether a hair transplant is the appropriate treatment. If your thinning or balding is not severe, medication may be effective. However, if the hair loss is extensive, there may not be enough donor hair available for a successful transplant.

Donor Hair Density
Healthy hair density on the back and sides of your head is crucial, as these are the areas from which donor follicles are usually taken. The density in these areas will greatly influence the success of your transplant.

Hair Texture
All hair types can be suitable for transplant surgery. Patients with curly or wavy hair often see better results with fewer grafts, as the texture can improve the appearance of density. Afro-textured hair, for example, can create a "double density" effect due to its natural curl, allowing us to achieve excellent results with fewer grafts.

Hair Thickness
Individuals with thicker hair require fewer grafts to achieve a natural appearance since thicker hair tends to cover the scalp more effectively.

You’ll begin to see the full results of your hair transplant after 12 to 18 months, as most transplanted hair follicles will have reached their full potential by then. While most of the transplanted hairs will remain permanently, some shedding may occur as you age.

It’s important to consider the role of non-surgical treatments, such as medication, alongside a transplant. Hair-loss medication will not only help ensure the best results from your procedure but also assist in maintaining hair in other areas that may be prone to thinning. As hair loss can progress over time, most patients may need another procedure or a smaller touch-up. We'll discuss a comprehensive long-term plan with you during your consultation to help you manage your hair loss effectively.

Hair transplant procedures are carried out under local anaesthesia, so once the initial injections are given, you should experience no pain or discomfort during the procedure. Many of our patients find the process relaxing, with some even falling asleep. After the procedure, you may experience mild swelling and discomfort, but this is temporary and can be easily managed with medication. The day after surgery, you should have no significant pain or discomfort.

After your surgery, we will provide a tailored selection of medications to prevent infection and ease any discomfort:

  1. Antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection.
  2. Antihistamines (if necessary) to relieve scalp itchiness post-surgery.
  3. Painkillers to manage any discomfort after the procedure.
  4. Steroid tablets may be prescribed to prevent and reduce swelling.

Additionally, we will prescribe hair-loss medications to help enhance and maintain the results of your hair transplant:

Most of our procedures use a part-shaven technique, where we trim the donor area for extraction while allowing you to keep most of the hair on top. However, we also offer unshaven FUE hair transplants (UFUE) and direct hair implantation methods, which allow us to perform the procedure without shaving a larger area of your head. This option may not be suitable for all patients, so we recommend discussing it with your surgeon during your consultation.

The ideal hair transplant procedure for you will depend on the extent of your hair loss and your personal preferences. We recommend that all our patients consult with one of our hair transplant specialists, who will gather your details and pass them on to one of our surgeons. The surgeon will then create a customised hair transplant plan tailored to your specific hair restoration needs.

You can expect to see new, sustained hair growth around 3 months after your procedure, following the shedding phase. This timeline can vary from patient to patient, so it might take a bit longer for some. The initial growth tends to be subtle, making the transplant appear "undetectable," but over time, the hairs will gradually thicken and become more voluminous.

Full results of your hair transplant will be visible after 12 to 18 months, allowing you to confidently show off your new hair.
